Georgina Lightning Nominee For 2010 EPIC Awards 'Emerging Artist'
The White House Project 2010 EPIC Awards 'Emerging Artist' category includes filmmaker Georgina Lightning for Older Than America. Deadline for voting ends March 22 at 11:59 PM.
Older Than America is the story of a daughter who has visions of her mothers experiences at a Catholic boarding school that reflects the physical, emotional and sexual abuse that was endured by Native American and First Nations people more than 35 years ago.

Ke$ha’s Lame Fashion Fail Stigmatizes Native Racism
FIRST OFF… Let me state that I am in no way shape of form a Ke$ha fan. And I hate that I even have to utter it’s name in my beloved .com that wholeheartedly and respectfully pays tribute to all our fine Native entertainers.

So it is with complete disgust that I go into her performance on American Idol. You know the one where she gets through half her atrocious song and dance and returns wearing a headdress or pityful attempt at a warbonnet.
I’ve had it up to my eyeballs with the pure incessant disrespect Native people endure. From situations like this to wannabe ‘holyman’ who want to smoke me with their cedar and take cash donations from the inside of his tipi/deathlodge. Enough is enough people. What more can I say or point out. Pride, honor and respect for our culture should be reason enough for us to stand together and let out voices be heard.
Letting time pass on this issue and being silent does nothing for our people. Or future generations. This bugs me. I am livid. Or better yet, I want to make this one of the nastiest messes she will ever find herself in. My first stop is her websites Ke$ha US and Ke$ha Canada. Then I’m sending American Idol an email. A Year In Retrospect
Days before my first post all I knew was I wanted to do something important, with Native people, and have as much fun as humaly possible. That is the birth of 'Premiere Modern Native American Entertainment'. And it had been on my mind for awhile that Indian Country didnt have a media enviornment for our entertainers.
My first relevent post was of Litefoot and his video shoot for "Im'ma Problem". I had spent at least two months compiling different information from various visits and other research. A few months later I took up doing interviews for The Hoop radio Travel and entertainment being synonymous, I took my first plane ride and 'business' trip to the 11th Annual Native American Music Awards. A blur of countless emails, phone calls, research, family, dinner, laundry, school. It is absolutely a labor of love. Every minute well spent. Anything to provide the people a venue that was long overdue. All I knew was I was about to create and invent the marketplace for one on one original content that was exclusive to Native entertainment.
And aside from live bloopers and the few missed connections (more on that later) I’m content. I embrace the new year. My dreams for the future lie in the hope of day after day, providing an media experience based on Native entertainment. For you. For the people. For the world.

Cause if you ever heard him play – UGH! MAGIC!! Seriously, the APP is his sound while you control the game. Its also an awesome learning tool. Take the riff you learn from Rockstar Solos and apply it your own guitar.

This Is Just A Warm-Up
All this week until March 7 commemorative posts will be added for the 1 year anniversary of 'Premiere Modern Native American Entertainment'.
First and foremost, Thank you Jesus for allowing me the extraordinary experience of serving my people in this unprecedented manner. All the glory to you. All compliments go to you. In the Lords name I pray, Amen.
My most heartfelt and deepest gratitude to all the Native talent who accepted my invitation for conversations. I’ve begun to think of these convo’s as oral history. Something for the world to reflect on when were long gone. Another something left behind that says ‘Native people were here. They sang, danced and entertained the world with a rich beautiful culture’.
Saginaw Grant had a lot of wisdon to share reminiscent of that. It was like talking to a familial elder. All I could do was sit and listen.

Red Works Studio Second Online Auction
Bidding started yesterday on this 24 x 36 autographed print. The image is from 2007 Gathering Of Nations grand entry. Its the first inscribed poster of this size and the company watermark will not be displayed on the end product. Auction closes Monday, March 1 just before midnight.
“The goal behind my work is to not only empower, inspire and promote our beautiful Native cultures, but to also make art accessible to our people. So I host an auction every few months based on votes submitted by website visitors. So really it’s the people who drive what gets auctioned and this particular image had the most votes this time around. I root for certain images to get a boost in votes, because I certainly have favourites, and I’m glad this particular image made it to the the Top 10 spot. It was shot at the 2007 Gathering of Nations during the first Grand Entry. It’s been a lot of people’s favourite, so bidding should get interesting in the next few days.” says Red Works Studio owner Nadya Kwandibens.
Nadya created a series called Concrete Indians that reflects the urban indian experience. The series has also grown into a social networking site. Red Works Studio also provides services for portraits, events and products to name a few.

Native talent for ‘Shift the Power to the People’
A Public Service Announcement, created by ‘Shift the Power to the People’ brings awareness for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe in South Dakota. On January 31, 2010 the tribe declared a state of emergency after an ice storm hit the area cutting off electric and water. About 15,000 residents were left without these basic necessities during below-zero conditions. The storm also impacted the tribes water infrastructure which has left some homes inhabitable.
"In our treaties, the water running through our territories will always belong to the Lakota, we are near one of the largest bodies of fresh water in the United States, which belongs to us and we can't access it to build new homes and business, a nation made impoverished by this Government, after all that was done and our nations still held up to our end of the bargain - Chairman Joseph Brings Plenty"
Gil Birmingham, Q’orianka Kilcher, Alex Meraz, Chaske Spencer, Julia Jones are among the entertainers featured in this video.

Native American Jeff Doctor To Run For Congress
Jeff Doctor (Tonawanda Band of the Seneca Tribe) announced his candidacy for Congress February 22, 2010. He is a Democrat running for the 9th Congressional District in North Carolina.
Jeff Doctor is a community leader and a successful entrepreneur, who’s current work includes health care for Native Americans with diabetes. An investor and owner of small businesses, Doctor knows what it takes to create jobs. Doctor’s experience included working as a baggage handler and domestic violence counselor to starting a number of successful small businesses in the Charlotte area. Doctor is the son of a Vietnam Veteran and a proud Native American. He and his wife Allyson live in Charlotte and have an 11 year old daughter, Chloe.
He also noted he will focus on promoting renewable energy, veteran’s issues and making sure the federal government is more fiscally responsible.

I Dont Ever Want The United States Government To Abuse Us Again
On February 9, 2010 Elouise Cobell gives a lecture in the Seminole Tribe of Florida auditorium in Hollywood, FL.
Elouise Cobell walks up, stands right next to me while the food is being blessed. I can feel her arm against mine. At that very moment, in my prayer I’m thanking the Lord that I can be side by side to one of Indian Country’s most badass historical figures. This Native woman, a living legend. Revered in my mind since I first heard her name 15 years ago.
These are her reflections.
She says ‘I began looking at statements that dont look right and asking questions, pushing Congress for an appointment. The case started in the George Bush Sr. administraion, they wouldnt talk. We were happy to deal with the Clinton Administration – nothing.’
‘I continued to stay in the face of the United States government.’ On the day of the filing in the Lincoln Memorial ‘I thought ‘oh my god’ Im suing the United States government. I had goosebumps. I dont think I can. So I called a friend who said ‘If you dont, who will?’
‘It meant a lot to have the support of the tribes and individual indians. There was a unity’. I thought ‘ We will come back to be the powerful people that we were at one time.’
On the day of settlement, Secret Service comes in buzzing around the room then Ken Salazar walks in. He sits directly across from me and asks ‘Who are you that you can shut down the entire United States government?’

A Conversation with Nathan Chasing Horse

Medicine man, award-winning actor and motivational speaker, Nathan Chasing Horse is from the Rosebud Nation of South Dakota. He is probably best known for his role as “Smiles-A-Lot” in the epic movie “Dances with Wolves.” He has been in several other productions since then including the film “Dreamkeeper” and the TV miniseries “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.”
Nathan splits his time residing in several major cities in California and Canada.
His ceremonial responsibilities however, take him all over the United States and Canada traveling in what has been affectionately named the “Groovemobile.” Nathan is hard to pin down as he is constantly on the move and is in big demand for his words of wisdom and healing. Mr. Chasing Horse spends a large portion of his time doing outreach.
He is confident that it is possible to keep tradition alive for young people even when faced with the pressures of gangs, drugs and alcohol.
Apart from his dedication to teaching and motivating Native youth, Nathan is an accomplished martial arts student, experienced in rifle handling and archery, horse riding and training, and modern/traditional singing and dancing.
Mr. Chasing Horse cites Sitting Bull, his Grandfather and Father as his personal heroes.

Charlie Ballard is a Two-Spirit comedian, of the Anishnabe and Sac/Fox tribes leading the next wave of alternative comic's. Charlie's comedic style can be described as a blend of physical, slapstick, sass, wit, and some good old fashioned nonsense. Charlie's been seen on Comedy Central, LOGO and has been featured in National publications like Campus Magazine, Indian Country Newspaper, and the Advocate Magazine. After finishing college, Charlie almost entered UCLA as a grad student but decided to pursue a career in stand up comedy instead. This past year Charlie moved up to headlining colleges and casino's and is looking forward to breaking into other entertainment mediums such as film and television. Charlie's played audiences from San Franciso to New York and has been well received by many different communties. Watch Charlie as one of the fastest rising voices of our generation. Aho!

Darryl Tonemah (Kiowa/Comanche/Tuscarora), has a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and Cultural Studies, a M.Ed., in Community Counseling, and three Bachelors Degrees. He is a partner in Native Health Group, promoting health education and wellness worldwide. He was the Behavioral Scientist for the southwest sites of the National Institutes of Health Diabetes Prevention Program. He has worked in the field of health and wellness for over 20 years. He sits on many state and national boards to address health behavior and health disparities.
Darryl seeks ways to create opportunities for better health among native peoples around the world. He has contributed to the success of health programs in both urban and rural settings. He has traveled the world promoting healthy behavior change as it relates to individuals as well as community wellness. He is internationally known as an agent of change for health and wellness. His trainings include many topics related to wellness, diabetes and chronic disease health behavior change. He has conducted over 750 trainings and Keynotes from grass roots communities to Universities and Fortune 500 companies. He has spoken alongside top international speakers and researchers, including Bob Green from the Oprah Winfrey show. His use of humor and storytelling to connect with the audience has won him international accolades.
Dr. Tonemah is also an accomplished musician and entertainer. He has recorded 5 award winning and critically acclaimed cd’s. His most recent CD “Ink Blots and Random Thoughts” was nominated for a Native American Music Award, and a Aboriginal Peoples Choice Award. He has also appeared in two movies. He is currently writing two books. One on health behavior change, and the other the first of a trilogy of novels. He has also been approached about writing and scoring a screenplay, and will be pursuing those goals within the next year.
He lives in Norman, Oklahoma.

NYE Countdown with Lady Gaga in Miami
So Happy I Could Die and it’s alright.
Semi Precious Weapons opened the show. I like those boys. They put on a great little show.
Perez Hilton ran up the aisle to the control booth. His prescence quickly forgotten as soon as the Lady Gaga showed up in her lightbulb vest and fishnets.
The Lady Gaga is magic. Forget large stages and theatrical productions. She doesnt need it.
Right before her piano interlude Gagalita called a person in the audience and invited them back to the Fontainebleau for the poolside party.
Second to the last song was Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say). Very touching and heart warming. I didnt think it could get any better until... she said 'Were going to celebrate New Year's early. Count back from 10 to get this last song. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1!!! “Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, Caught in a bad romance, Ra Ra-ah-ah-ah, Roma Roma-ma”
Goin Native: The Indian Comedy Slam
I have no idea what time I got home last night but I was extremely overjoyed to find the ‘Goin Native’ already on my Showtime OnDemand with Comcast.
Host Charlie Hill was accompanied by Marc Yaffee, Jim Ruel, Vaughn Eagle Bear and JR Redwater, Howie Miller and Larry Omaha in this celebration of native humor.
Yes, native humor. Frybread, social causes and lots of other stuff. You will just have to see this one for yourself.
